Nursing Science
Overview
The Faculty of Nursing Science, one of the departments at Mon National College (MNC), located in Nyi Sar, is offering a bachelor’s degree program in nursing science. This program has been developed to align with international undergraduate nursing academic practice and is therefore three years (36 months) in length, segregating into 120 hours each year. The curriculum of the Bachelor in Nursing Science is developed by Myanmar and international experts including the Royal College of Pediatricians and Child Health (RCPCH), who provides programmatic and technical assistance. The course maintains a balanced mix of theory and practice at a 60-40% ratio. Notably, it exceeds the practice hours required in many health systems, including those in Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.
Background
In the Mon area, particularly along the long-standing, conflict-affected Thai-Myanmar border, there has been an insufficient clinical care workforce. This shortage is due to several factors, including healthcare negligence by military governments, instability in both technical and financial support, intermittent conflicts between state military and non-state (ethnic) armed organizations, poverty, and difficult accessibility. Following the political upheaval since the February 2021 coup, a civil disobedience movement among government servants and a widespread armed revolution emerged across the country. In response, most ethnic organizations, including the Mon health and education committees, have recognized the need to build their own health workforce. In late September 2023, the Mon National Education Committee (MNEC) and MNHC launched a nursing bachelor program.
