The Mon National College Research Unit
The Mon National College Research Unit aims to foster a culture of inquiry, training local researchers and promoting critical thinking and innovation. The Research Unit will empower MNC students and faculty to produce high quality research at different levels, to participate in academic and research communities, and to enhance interdisciplinary connections within the MNC and with other institutions. The Research Unit will advance the understanding of key issues relevant to the Mon community, and develop the skills to address these.
MNC Research Unit Activities - 2024-25
- Partnership with Chiang Mai University (Regional Centre for Sustainable Social Sciences and Development): Understanding the Present, Preparing New Beginnings: Co-Producing Knowledge on Ethnic Inclusivity in Burma – MNC faculty training, individual mentored research projects, and forthcoming publications and conference participation.
- Social Science Department led research methods training and small projects for 16 MNC undergraduates, who will present their findings at a planned public seminar.
- Joint MNEC-MNC roundtable discussion on Mon Education at the RCSD-organized Pre-conference Workshop, at the 5th International Conference on Burma/Myanmar Studies (Session 1) in Mae Sot, 1 August 2025. We will publish these papers, hopefully in a special tri-lingual issue of the Journal of Mon Studies, and are planning another round-table on Mon education in 2026.
- Mon Birdlife Survey – Accessing Traditional Forest-use Practices and Exploring the Actionable Plan for the Forest Conservation in Southern Part of Mon Region, Myanmar – project exploring the ecological significance and traditional forest resources use and practices of the Mon community, in the context of climate change.
