Background
Mon National College (MNC) is part of higher education programs for Mon Youths and students in southern Myanmar. The college is established with the support of Mon communities, parents, and local individuals who are interested in community-based education. The college is also established to meet the demand of local youths who cannot attend higher education in major cities due to cost and accessibility. Local Mon parents have been demanding closer and better education programs in the local for the local and the local. Mon language-speaking teachers and other external teachers are pleased that they can teach in the local areas where students are well supported external teachers are pleased that they can teach in the local areas where students are well supported in terms of accommodations and welfare. The college is operated self-funded by the Mon people and community with partial funds from other charities.
Mon National College is not just a college, but a collective effort towards education. It is a hub of learning for post-high school, vocational training, and higher education, utilizing national and international education resources. The Mon National Education Committee (MNEC) is a crucial part of this collective effort, ensuring the sustainability of the college until it is fully functional by itself.
Job Summary
MNCs offer education opportunities for Mon youth who are unable to afford their higher education as an alternative education pathway to access quality education. Currently, the institution runs six associate degrees such as Social Science, Mass Media and Journalism, Education in Teaching, Education Management, Community Leadership and Management, and Mon Literature and Culture. Additionally, it offers a bachelor’s degree in Nursing Science program. Around 300 are studying at MNC for their higher education achievements.
The Academic Coordinator holds crucial roles in coordinating course planning, cooperating with course directors for course implementation, tracking students’ grades, planning for general education courses, administering college-level entrance exams, supervising teaching assistants, and supporting the vice-chancellor (academic Affairs) and chancellor in academic collaboration with regional and international education institutions. As the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs is a pro-pono position, the Academic Coordinator also takes some roles in VC Academic Affairs.
Duties and Responsibilities;
Supervision and Guidance
- Overseeing the performance of academic officers and teaching assistants to ensure the efficient fulfillment of their academic responsibilities.
- Assigning teaching assignments to specific courses and providing comprehensive mentorship to enhance their effectiveness in guiding students’ academic achievements.
Facilitation and Coordination:
- Initiate meetings between instructors and teaching assistants to foster cooperation and deepen instructors’ understanding of the institution’s culture and the role of teaching assistants in the classroom.
- Propose logistical requirements essential for the operation of the academic department to the esteemed Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs)
Program Development and Management
- Collaborating with the Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) to plan for courses and expand the institution’s academic program
- Engaging with course directors and esteemed instructors to ensure that all courses align with the institution’s academic standards and policies.
- Managing general education courses with the support of the vice-chancellor (Academic Affairs) and the Chancellor
- Taking responsibility for networking with instructors to assign the required instructor for each course
Student Support and Counselling in Academic Performance
- Supporting students applying for scholarships and study opportunities abroad while fostering connections with partner universities to facilitate student exchanges and credit transfer requirements.
- Addressing academic concerns raised by academic officers and initiating the continuous revision of academic policies grounded in practical experience.
- Counselling students receiving a low grade each semester
Academic Administration
- Assist the departmental heads in the development of course syllabi that resonate with the institution’s overarching academic objectives
- Leading in the calculation and timely dissemination of students’ grades and documentation of academic records
- Conducting evaluations for instructors’ teaching performance
Partnership and Collaboration
- Assist the vice chancellor (Academic Affairs) and chancellor in drafting and refining documents essential for fostering strategic partnerships
- Participate in partnership meetings and college planning meetings
Reporting and Planning
- Report about detailed program requirements and achievement throughout each academic cycle
- Forecasting and planning for the requisite guest lectures essential to enrich the academic fabric of the institution.
- Leading in the planning and execution of college-level entrance exams
Qualifications/Skills:
- Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with students and faculty.
- Ability to work with youth from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating inclusivity and sensitivity.
- Strong time management skills to handle multiple tasks and prioritize accordingly.
- Organizational skills to ensure efficient teaching materials and administrative management.
- Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
Education requirements:
- Obtain a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related fields
- Have experience in education-related fields for at least 3 years
