Overview

Mon researchers and scholars have been working on the survival of the Mon language (literacy and literature) since the invasion of the Pegu capital in 1757. After nearly three hundred years of assimilation in Myanmar and Thailand, preserving the Mon language has required international collaboration to maintain language, identity, and cultural autonomy. This faculty has designed courses to sustain the Mon National language, literacy, and cultural identity in its native regions across lower Myanmar and central Thailand.

Teachers and students at Mon National College (in Myanmar) explore Mon literacy through the humanities, cultural identity, old manuscripts, and arts. Students gain both conceptual knowledge and practical skills by developing Mon grammar, spelling, and writing for academic purposes. They also have opportunities to learn Mon cultural dance, classical music, and the history of the Mon people. Mon scholar monks provide introductory lessons on the Mon Dhammasat Text and other ancient Mon manuscripts. This faculty is led by prominent Mon scholars and researchers from the Mon educational community, offering students and instructors access to international Mon scholars for academic support and advice
